4 leadership principles startup entrepreneurs must know

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith (center) joins executive coaches Serely Alcaraz and Dr. Peter Chee for a CEO, HR, and Senior Leaders conference in Manila on October 26, 2018.

The road to business success is one that can be lonely and dreary. The unrelenting passion of entrepreneurs and startup CEOs, while initially beneficial for the organization, can soon become a deterrent to the growth of the business and even its people. And with their current knowledge and skillset, it is inevitable for any startup entrepreneur to seek help in developing and running the business.

According to the world’s leading executive coach and best-selling author, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, the organizational dysfunction starts when the leader makes all the decisions and everyone else merely accepts them. As much as it is not enabling and maximizing the full potential of the employees, it is also extremely taxing on the top honcho. But that shouldn’t be the case, according to Dr. Goldsmith.

Having trained a number of corporate leaders across the globe, Dr. Goldsmith believes there are certain leadership principles that entrepreneurial leaders and start-up CEOs must adopt for self-improvement and re-assessment towards creating a positive impact on an organization.

1)      Develop an exit strategy. “It is a good exercise to take and think of what you would want to achieve before you exit,” said Dr. Goldsmith. Drawing small and big finish lines helps diffuse the pressure of success, especially for startup businesses. By celebrating both small and milestone wins, it motivates the individual to continue to reach for the bigger goal without just banking on the big one.

2)      Be a great client. “30 years ago, no CEO would have admitted wanting or needing to be coached. Coaching has come out of the closet and is something that people are no longer ashamed of,” said Dr. Goldsmith. It is important to understand that through coaching, entrepreneurial leaders are receiving mentoring which is hard to come by in the nature of the business. In the process, they are also creating a learning environment for themselves and their people.

3)      Don’t get lost in logic. “A lot of your suggestions are going to become orders even if you didn’t want them to. I really have to caution people about saying ‘have you thought of this?’ or ‘have you tried that?’ because once you start saying that, they just salute the flag and do it your way,” said. Dr. Goldsmith. He added that success is now defined as how much you can empower others and not how much you can do yourself.

4)      I know less than you do. Most startup businesses are created with intense passion from its founders – knowing the ins and outs of the business more than anyone else. However, as the business starts to grow, the game also changes as more people are hired who know more how to navigate the business landscape. When someone knows more than you do, it’s OK – that’s what the organization is for, it is about being able to lean on each other and working towards the same goals. “You can’t tell a knowledge worker what to do, you have to ask them what to do,” said Dr. Goldsmith.

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith will headline a two-city CEO, HR, and Senior Leaders conference in Asia this October, with Manila as his last stop on October 26, 2018. He will be joined by top coaching gun Dr. Peter Chee, and master trainer and chief coach Serely Alcaraz. The leadership conference is organized by ITD, the global leadership development expert. A New Home of Hope for Cancer Patients at The Medical City

Dr. Beatrice Tiangco, APSCI Deputy Director; Dr. Daniel MAlonzo, APSCI Director; TMC President and CEO Dr. Alfredo R. A. Bengzon; Chairman of the Board Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento; Dr. Manuel Francisco Roxas, APSCI Deputy Director, and Senior Vice President for the Medical Services Group Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos.

Premier health institution The Medical City (TMC) yesterday launched its Augusto P. Sarmiento Cancer Institute (APSCI), named after its Chairman of the Board and one of the country’s top surgical oncologists.

One of the highlights of the launch was the unveiling of the APSCI signage and historical marker at the 8th Floor Nursing Tower, TMC in Ortigas, Pasig City. A short program followed at the main lobby where a grand exhibit is mounted featuring the institute’s brand of cancer care.

The event was graced by TMC President and CEO Dr. Alfredo R. A. Bengzon, Senior Vice President for the Medical Services Group Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Jose Xavier B. Gonzales, APSCI Director Dr. Daniel M. Alonzo and Deputy Directors Drs. Beatrice Tiangco and Manuel Francisco Roxas, TMC doctors, managers, and staff, patient partners, and the honoree, Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento.

About Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento
Dr. Sarmiento graduated from the University of the Philippines in April 1948. From September to March 1949, he worked as a Junior Parasitologist under the Schistomiasis Control Program of the Department of Health.

TMC Chairman of the Board Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento

He then became a first year resident at the UP-Philippine General Hospital, Department of Obstetrics. Dr. Sarmiento used his Obstetrics residency training as his gateway to get into the Department of Surgery where he started his surgical residency in early 1950s.

Upon completion of his surgical residency training in 1954, like many other graduates of various medical specialties, he flew to the USA to pursue more advanced surgical training.

In 1955, an opportunity came to Dr. Sarmiento to be trained as one of the first Filipino surgical residents at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Valhalla of Cancer Surgery in New York City. He stayed for four years, completing his training under the American surgeon widely regarded as the Father of Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Hayes Martin. He worked for a time as an associate of Dr. Martin, but decided to return to Manila in 1958.

In Manila, he taught and practiced general and cancer surgery at the PGH and at two other hospitals. In 1967, he moved his practice along with several overseas trained UP doctors to join Dr. Agerico B. M. Sison in a small hospital in Mandaluyong City. It was named the ABM Sison Hospital, in honor of their mentor. The ABM Sison was later renamed The Medical City and the rest is history. TMC celebrated its 50th year anniversary last year.

“I am pleased and humbled to have the Cancer Institute of The Medical City named after me and I am accepting this honor for and on behalf of the people who have gone ahead of us, who had given great ideas and a lot of their time to help us get to where we are now. What we are doing now is just add-ons to the great work they had already started,” said Dr. Sarmiento.

The Medical City’s Augusto P. Sarmiento Cancer Institute
“At the APSCI, we believe in healthcare that nurtures a partnership – one that gives strength, advanced services, and most especially, hope,” says Dr. Alonzo.
The APSCI, according to Dr. Alonzo, is gifted with the inspiration of Dr. Sarmiento and the organizational strength of the TMC institution.

“Thank you for the inspiration Dr. Sarmiento and for being a role model for all of us as we, at APSCI, continue to save lives and improve the quality of life of our patients,” said Dr. Alonzo.

APSCI Director Dr. Daniel M. Alonzo, APSCI Deputy Director Dr. Beatrice Tiangco, SVP for the Medical Services Group Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, President and CEO Dr. Alfredo R. A. Bengzon, Chairman of the Board Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Jose Xavier B. Gonzales, and APSCI Deputy Director Dr. Manuel Francisco Roxas.
Cancer care at APSCI can be described by 8Cs compassionate, cost-effective, coordinated, collaborative, comprehensive, customized, centered around the patient, and committed.

The APSCI leadership, composed of Dr. Alonzo and deputy directors Drs. Tiangco and Roxas, has started doctor-initiated researches.  They are beefing up their cancer registry, based on patients’ records to find better ways of treatment.

Dr. Alonzo is also looking at training programs for the next generation of cancer specialists.

He admitted there’s still a lot of work to be done at the APSCI but all these quality improvements and innovations are aimed at giving cancer patients the brand of TMC care that they deserve.

“With our personalized programs and treatments, we will engage and support our patients throughout their cancer journey - from nutrition therapy, to pain management, and to palliative care.

K-Pop’s hottest idols tour the Philippines on a wild 48-hour gastronomic frenzy

Asia’s craziest food contest returns to the Philippines as One Night Food Trip – International Edition enters its second season on tvN Asia. This time, K-pop heartthrobs Nichkhun of boy band 2PM and actor-host Alexander “Xander” Lee face off against celebrity cousins Danica Sotto-Pingris and Ciara Sotto in a culinary frenzy around the country. One Night Food Trip – International Edition will fly exclusively with Cebu Pacific for the entire second season.

Based on popular Korean food competition show One Night Food Trip, the international edition adds a twist by having K-pop celebrities travel to various Asian destination including the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia where they eat, play, and compete against local celebrities. Each team must complete missions involving exotic flavors and cultural attractions to earn stamps. The team that collects the most stamps within 48 hours takes home the Golden Passport.

In the Philippine segment of the show, Nichkhun and Xander jet-set together from Cebu to Pampanga, while celebrity chef Danica and singer-actress Ciara take a separate route from Coron to Legazpi for a unique experience of the country’s sights and delicacies. One of their stops is at luxury integrated resort City of Dreams Manila where they explore the Forbes five-star hotel, NÃœWA, try out decadent dishes at the award-winning Crystal Dragon restaurant, and immerse in the DreamWorks-inspired interactive play space called DreamPlay.

The four-episode Philippine segment on Season 2 airs on 30 July (Monday) at 18:30 (GMT+8). It is in partnership with the Tourism Promotions Board, an attached agency of the Department of Tourism, that markets and promotes the Philippines domestically and internationally as a world-class tourism destination.

Aside from 2PM, Nichkhun is also a songwriter, actor and model, with television and film projects in South Korea and China. On the other hand, Xander Lee is a former member of the South Korean boy band U-KISS. His most recent projects include the lead role in a Philippine TV series “My Korean Jagiya,” opposite Heart Evangelista.

From the Philippines, Danica Sotto-Pingris is a television host and celebrity chef, with a degree in Culinary Arts and Technology Management from the Center for Culinary Arts Manila. Her cousin, Ciara Sotto, is a television host, singer, actress and expert pole dancer. She regularly teaches pole dancing classes in Manila.

Cebu Pacific, the official carrier of One Night Food Trip – International Edition 2, has the widest network within the Philippines with 37 domestic destinations, which made traveling and shooting from one island to another easier with seamless inter-island connections, sparing the hosts and crew from flying to bigger airport hubs just to move across the Philippines. Aside from a direct flight between Manila and Incheon, Cebu Pacific also flies directly from Incheon to Cebu, making it easier to get to popular beach destinations like Mactan Island or Bohol, or connect to 26 international destinations that span the Middle East, Asia, Australia and the United States (Guam).

One Night Food Trip – International Edition debuted in 2017 on tvN in Asia with sister-and-brother K-pop idols, Sandara “Dara” Park and Thunder pairing against TV host Grace Lee and radio DJ Sam YG for the Philippine segment.

One Night Food Trip – International Edition will premiere exclusively on tvN on 30 July (Monday) at 18:30 (GMT+8). tvN is available in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, with subtitles in English, Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia and Thai.

Aside from canned vegetables, Mega Prime Quality also added Garbanzos, canned fruits and preserves: fruit cocktail, peach halves and nata de coco to its line of products.

“Sobrang excited ako na kasama ako sa Prime Mom Club. For me kasi, it’s important for us first time moms to connect, share our experiences and learn from each other. Gusto kong i-share yung mga alam ko lalo na sa kusina at masaya kasing mag-try ng recipes na nag work for other mommies. I really hope na madaming mommies ang sumali sa Prime Mom Club,” says Marian Rivera.
